The Refugee Crisis

I spent two months in northern France volunteering for Care4Calais, a charity that supports refugees across the UK and France. I have written a couple of poems about the refugee crisis and my experiences on the French-British border:

Today, Together and Tomorrow

Today won’t be my last day here.

The need in Calais is more than clear

Calais is such a very special place

To see people on site beyond their smiley face

To see and hear stories we are often told

It can sometimes make us feel inside quite cold

But we are here making a huge difference

Even if back home people may be indifferent

To come here and be able to share what we see

We are in fact restoring some of humanity

The government are wrong the policies are wrong

But we stand in solidarity with those that are so strong

To flee war, persecution and then have to risk more

There is quite obviously a massive political flaw

They have no choice, this is their only way

But we will continue to support them day by day

We won’t give up and neither will our friends

We will fight for their rights until the end.

So don’t stop here take this all home

We are in this together, never alone.

Can you imagine?

The hardest part for me is leaving

It almost feels like a type of grieving

To know my journey back to the UK is safe

Yet our friends here must rely on faith

The ferry, the plane, the train so secure

But for them a boat with so many people to reassure

Why is it that I can cross so safely?

Whilst children cling onto their mothers so greatly

Waves, wind, rain and no land in sight

Can you imagine that feeling of fright?

As hours pass by not knowing where you are

Just hoping that safety is not too far

Drawing into the white cliffs

Feeling like you have just received your awaited gift

Opportunity, education and safety lies ahead

But then there is at least a two year wait full of dread

They know care for Calais will always be there

The support we give is just so rare

So after travelling for so many miles

There will always be an awaited well known smile

Some people will try to destroy what we do

But we persist and carry on through and through

The right wing will continue an attempt to tear us down

But the sadness and anger they deflect won’t linger around

They try to manipulate what we are doing here

Make judgements and comments to insight such fear

They say they don’t like nor agree with our stance

But why is it I shouldn’t be friendly and dance?

They call us the enemy, traitors and sinners

But by continuing what we do we stand as the winners

They want our attention they want our reactions

However we will not give them this satisfaction

Our strength and power is being in this together.

And we will stand in solidarity forever

Today, Together and Tomorrow was written following the deaths of six Afghan migrants attempting to cross the English Channel in August 2023. I was in Calais at this time and felt I needed to express my emotions in response. I wrote Can you imagine? in response to Britain First, a far-right political party who shared a video of me dancing with refugees at Care4Calais’ distribution sites. The party described my behaviour as inappropriate and claimed I was dancing with “invaders”.

Since 1999, 378 people have died at the French-British border, each one an individual trying to reach the UK to escape war, persecution and danger. The British government’s policies are causing more and more deaths; they have blood on their hands. Why can’t we enforce safe passages now, before it’s too late?
